But those who visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/der-rova-von-antananarivo\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">royal palace<\/a> of the capital of Madagascar should not simply walk past this piece of history. Directly at the <em>Lalana Ramboatiana<\/em> between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/der-rova-von-antananarivo\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rova<\/a> of Antananarivo and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/der-palast-des-premierministers\">palace of the Prime Minister<\/a> runs approximately 40 meters long terracotta relief.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was elaborated in the years from 1940 to 1946, allegedly by a Malagasy student. Who actually made it is no longer known. The relief is an extract from Madagascar&#8217;s history. From everyday life with men in pirogues fishing to catching a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/madagaskars-heimliches-wahrzeichen-das-zebu\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">zebu<\/a> for a ceremony, various situations are depicted.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7180\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7180\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Relief-von-Tana-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7180\" src=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Relief-von-Tana-4-310x134.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"310\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Relief-von-Tana-4-310x134.jpg 310w, https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Relief-von-Tana-4-768x332.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Relief-von-Tana-4.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Left Queen Ranavalona III in a sedan chair, right General Gallieni on a horse<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The relief also shows the French general <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/die-franco-hova-kriege-der-beginn-der-kolonialherrschaft\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joseph Gallieni<\/a> on a horse, probably when he entered Antananarivo in 1896, one year after the occupation of Madagascar&#8217;s capital by French troops. Gallieni served as governor-general of Madagascar under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/die-franco-hova-kriege-der-beginn-der-kolonialherrschaft\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">French occupation<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/die-franco-hova-kriege-der-beginn-der-kolonialherrschaft\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">last queen of the Merina<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/volksgruppen-madagaskars\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">people of the highlands<\/a>, is also depicted on the relief, carried in a sedan chair. A few months later she was sent into exile and never returned to her home island.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With these scenes, the terracotta relief depicts a part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/category\/politik\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Madagascar&#8217;s history<\/a> in amazing details. Unfortunately, nobody has officially taken over the restoration and preservation of the relief and so the historical relief is slowly crumbling away.
