Madagascar&#8217;s airports differ greatly in equipment, size and modern equipment such as safety checks or baggage carousels. The number of passengers handled and the professionalism of the local staff vary accordingly.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3975\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3975\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Ivato-Airport.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3975 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Ivato-Airport-300x82.jpg\" alt=\"Ivato Airport\" width=\"300\" height=\"82\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Ivato-Airport-300x82.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Ivato-Airport-1024x280.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3975\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The old Ivato Airport on the right<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Antananarivo (TNR)<\/strong>: Ivato Airport, named after the capital&#8217;s district of the same name, is Madagascar&#8217;s largest airport and the one with the most arriving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/fluege\/\">international<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/fluege\/\">flights<\/a>. The new international airport was inaugurated in 2021 and meets modern standards with check-in counters, screening equipment, escalators and baggage conveyors as found in airports worldwide. The old airport is still in use, but only for domestic flights.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Antsiranana (Diego Suarez, DIE)<\/strong>: Arrachart Airport was named after a French pilot who lived during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/second-world-war-operation-ironclad\/\">Second<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/second-world-war-operation-ironclad\/\">World<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/second-world-war-operation-ironclad\/\">War<\/a> when the airport was built. The airport is relatively well frequented and equipped with a small kiosk and small waiting areas with fans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Sambava (SVB)<\/strong>: The airport of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/von-der-schote-zum-gewuerz-vanille\/\">vanilla<\/a> capital is quite small and has accordingly no own name. An ATR can just land there, bigger airplanes can not. In the last years the runway has suffered quite a lot from cyclones and floods. The airport has a very short baggage conveyor belt ending on a wooden trestle and a single, rather small arrivals hall.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6900\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6900\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flughafen-Sambava-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flughafen-Sambava-1-310x233.jpg\" alt=\"Flughafen Sambava (1)\" width=\"310\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flughafen-Sambava-1-310x233.jpg 310w, https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flughafen-Sambava-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flughafen-Sambava-1.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6900\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sambava Airport<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Maroantsetra (WMN)<\/strong>: The tiny airport of Maroantsetra is called &#8220;Aerodrome&#8221;, but it consists of only one hall and a bumpy, crooked runway. Twin Otter planes can still land here with difficulty. Chickens like to walk around here, the suitcase scale is antique and almost always shows a few kilos too little. The flight tickets are still handwritten here. Also for arriving and departing flights there is a blackboard written by hand with chalk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Toamasina (Tamatave, TMM)<\/strong>: In the biggest port of Madagascar directly at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/category\/ost\/\">east coast<\/a> there is a small but nice airport called Ambalamanasy. It is named after the district of the same name. There is a small kiosk, bus shelters with fans and digital scoreboards, but the latter have not got beyond the demo text display yet.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6896\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6896\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flughafen-Maroantsetra-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6896\" src=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flughafen-Maroantsetra-1-310x207.jpg\" alt=\"Flughafen Maroantsetra (1)\" width=\"310\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flughafen-Maroantsetra-1-310x207.jpg 310w, https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flughafen-Maroantsetra-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flughafen-Maroantsetra-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flughafen-Maroantsetra-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6896\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maroantsetra Airport<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Tolagnaro (Fort Dauphin, FTU)<\/strong>: The airport of Tolagnaro is small and a bit older, but still usable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Toliara (Tul\u00e9ar, TLE)<\/strong>: In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/category\/sued\/\">south of Madagascar<\/a> the small airport of Toliara was modernized a few years ago, so that in the meantime screening devices and modern switches are available. However, nothing works faster.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Morondava (MOQ)<\/strong>: This small airport is relatively well frequented due to its proximity to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/baobab-allee\/\">Baobab Alley<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Mahajanga (MJN)<\/strong>: The Amborovy Airport, formerly named after a former president Tsiranana Airport, is located in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/category\/west\/\">west<\/a> of the island. Two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/fluege\/\">international airlines<\/a> from Mayotte and the Comoros land here regularly, which has created something like a touch of international flair.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9076\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9076\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flughafen-Mahajanga.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-9076\" src=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flughafen-Mahajanga-310x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"310\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9076\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mahajanga Airport<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Nosy Boraha (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/insel-st-marie\/\">St. Marie<\/a>, SMS)<\/strong>: &#8220;This is one of Madagascar&#8217;s most modern airports, and is well within European standards. This is the only airport transfer in Madagascar where you can paddle in a pirogue from the island of Nosy Nato directly to the runway.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/insel-nosy-be\/\">Nosy Be<\/a> (NOS)<\/strong>: Fascene is, apart from the capital, the biggest airport of Madagascar and accordingly modernly equipped. There are regular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/fluege\/\">international<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/fluege\/\">flights<\/a> to Ethiopia, La R\u00e9union and Italy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6905\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6905\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flughafen-Ambilobe-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6905\" src=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flughafen-Ambilobe-1-310x207.jpg\" alt=\"Flughafen Ambilobe (1)\" width=\"310\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flughafen-Ambilobe-1-310x207.jpg 310w, https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flughafen-Ambilobe-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flughafen-Ambilobe-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flughafen-Ambilobe-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6905\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abandoned runway remains near Ambilobe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The formerly existing airports of Ambilobe, Morombe, Farafangana, Manakara and Fianarantsoa have not been used for years and are decaying noticeably. However, these airports are more like rudimentary runways without any further infrastructure, from which today STOL (short take-off and landing) machines could take off at most. If at all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But it is also best to bring a good dose of humour and patience to the other airports in Madagascar. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/mora-mora-immer-mit-der-ruhe\/\">Mora<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/mora-mora-immer-mit-der-ruhe\/\">mora<\/a><\/em> also applies to flying in Madagascar!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are currently ten airports operating in Madagascar, only three of which offer international flights.
