It is known under its name Tsarasaotra (translated \u201ea good place to live\u201c) or simply \u201eIle aux oiseaux\u201c which means birds&#8217; island. The area of 0,25 km\u00b2 size includes lake Alarobia and a second smaller lake and some shore sides. The park is a refuge for many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/waehrung-und-geldumtausch\/\">birds<\/a> that can be easily watched and photographed here \u2013 among them 14 endangered species that only occur in Madagascar.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5127\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5127\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Tsarasaotra-Palast-von-Ranavalona.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5127 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Tsarasaotra-Palast-von-Ranavalona-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Tsarasaotra Palast von Ranavalona\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Tsarasaotra-Palast-von-Ranavalona-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Tsarasaotra-Palast-von-Ranavalona-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Tsarasaotra-Palast-von-Ranavalona.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5127\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rainilarivony&#8217;s small palace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Madagascar pond heron (<em>Ardeola idae<\/em>) finds a home in the reeds as well as the critically endangered Meller&#8217;s duck (<em>Anas melleri<\/em>), the rarely seen Madagascan grebe (<em>Tachybaptus pelzelnii<\/em>) or the nimble Madagascar kingfisher (<em>Corythornis vintsioides<\/em>). But also more common bird species such as the cattle egret, squacco heron, night heron, black heron and reef heron, red-billed teal, white-faced whistling duck, knob-billed duck or the endemic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/der-spitzschopf-seidenkuckuck\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Crested Drongo<\/a> (<em>Dicrurus forficatus<\/em>) use this place for fishing, laying eggs and care for the brood \u2013 or just to relax.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the moment, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/en\/category\/national-parks\/\">park<\/a> is privately owned. Originally, prime minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/waehrung-und-geldumtausch\/\">Rainilarivony<\/a>, husband of the last Queen of the Merina, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/waehrung-und-geldumtausch\/\">Ranavalona III.<\/a>, bought the area in 1890. He created the park and built a small palace. The latter is still there, but sadly deteriorating visibly. As Rainilarivony \u2013 forced by the French <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/waehrung-und-geldumtausch\/\">colonial power<\/a> \u2013 escaped into exile in 1896, his son sold the park to Emile Ranarivelo. Today, the park is managed by German Sonia Ranarivelo. A path is leading visitors around the lake. One side is limited by a frequented road, some mansions and horse pastures.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5136\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5136\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Tsarasaotra-Reiher.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5136 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Tsarasaotra-Reiher-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Tsarasaotra Kuhreiher\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Tsarasaotra-Reiher-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Tsarasaotra-Reiher.jpg 668w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5136\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the omnipresent cattle egrets<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since 2005, lake Alarobia has been belonging to the smallest so-called Ramsar sites (Nr. 1464) and still is the only privately owned Ramsar site worldwide. The convention on wetlands had been initiated by WWF and was signed in 1971 in Ramsar, Iraq. Madagascar signed the contract in 1999. In protected Ramsar sites, hunting is prohibited and the signing parties commit themselves to save the survival of natural fauna and flora.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tsarasaotra park is open on workdays from 6 to 18 o&#8217;clock, at weekends on request. The entry fee is 15.000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/waehrung-und-geldumtausch\/\">Ariary<\/a> per person (approximately 5 \u20ac). If you have some hours left and are interested in birds, we can recommend you to visit this place. You can reach the park via your own car or simply by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/renault-4-das-madagassische-taxi\/\">taxi<\/a>. It is located between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/strassen-und-bruecken\/\">RN4<\/a> and Route des Hydrocarbures only four kilometers away from the city center of Tana.
