{"id":1463,"date":"2013-12-18T18:28:44","date_gmt":"2013-12-18T17:28:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/?p=1463"},"modified":"2020-06-06T18:30:33","modified_gmt":"2020-06-06T16:30:33","slug":"insel-st-marie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/en\/insel-st-marie\/","title":{"rendered":"St. Marie (Nosy Boraha)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The two islands St. Marie (in Malagasy Nosy Boraha) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/nosy-nato\/\">Nosy Nato<\/a> are located at the East coast of Madagascar and belong to the province of Toamasina. Especially Nosy Boraha is, besides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/insel-nosy-be\/\">Nosy Be<\/a>, one of the most visited islands of Madagascar and has a good infrastructure. St. Marie is relatively large, around 50 km long, above two to seven kilometres broad and has about 16.000 inhabitants. The north of the island has a little residual rainforest, the rest of the island mainly consists of secondary vegetation. A long road, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/strassen-und-bruecken\/\">RNS21<\/a>, leads from the island\u2019s south to its northern tip. Some rusty, decrepit cars drive along St. Marie\u2019s roads, but yellow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/tuk-tuks\/\">Tuk Tuks<\/a> mainly dominate the streets.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4777\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4777\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/TukTuk.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4777\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4777 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/TukTuk-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Tuktuk\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/TukTuk-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/TukTuk-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/TukTuk.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4777\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tuktuks &#8211; the main means of transportation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Capital of the island is Ambodifotatra. The city offers some restaurants, bars and grocery shops as well as souvenir booths, but also has some kind of small zoo in the south. The Malagasy name <em>Boraha<\/em> means as much as Abraham, which ascribes to the former arabic population. In 17th and 18th century, the island was settled by pirates, among them legendary freebooters like William Kidd or John Bowen. Still today some people suppose the treasure of William Kidd to be hidden on the \u201cpirate island\u201d Ile aux Forbans in the bay of Ambodifotratra, where they also found various pirate ships.\u00a0But the tiny island is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/?s=fady\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fady<\/a> and no one is allowed to visit it, a fact that is cooling down potential treasure hunters immediately. Some of the pirates\u2019 ships still lay on the ground of the sea. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/ilot-madame\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A small museum<\/a> on the harbor island Ilot Madame tells their story and more about the island itself. Some hundred meters further, there\u2019s an original <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/piratenfriedhof-st-pierre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pirate cemetery<\/a> as residue of those older times. The neighbourhood is also home to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/die-aelteste-kirche-madagaskars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Madagascar\u2019s oldest church<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today a modern, small airport offers daily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/fluege\/\">flights<\/a> to Antananarivo. Apart from that, St. Marie can be easily reached via boat from Soanierana Ivongo. Depending on waves, it takes about 2-3 hours \u2013 since 2016 even quicker with a new boat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0St. Marie is mainly famous for its white beaches of dreams. In several places, you can dive and snorkel. The coral reef around the island is untouched and home to a variety of corals, fish and other sea creatures. If you prefer to relax, get a cocktail in a bar and take your place on the beach between palm trees \u2013 or have fun in the local discotheque. From a five stars hotel to simple accommodation, Madagascar has everything. But generally, island life is rather simple.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In August, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madamagazine.com\/sonstige-saugetiere\/\">humpback whales<\/a> come to the coast to bear their babies. Coming from St. Marie, you can easily watch these gentle giants of the sea from a boat. The annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.festivaldesbaleines.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">whale festival<\/a> is celebrated everywhere on the island and was founded to make people aware of the sea mammals\u2019 conservation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you like it rather lonely and less touristic, maybe you like to try the nearby island Nosy Nato, too.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The two islands St. Marie (in Malagasy Nosy Boraha) and Nosy Nato are located at the East coast of Madagascar and belong to the province of Toamasina.
